Tenninkyo Area(Winter)

Winter in Tenninkyo attracts people to the snow-covered landscape of the “columnar joints”, which are sheer cliffs that tower up toward the sky. In particular, the beauty of the seven enormous, sharp rocks – known as Shichifukuiwa Rocks – with a covering of white snow, is a masterpiece. On the guided snowshoe tour, you can see the massive katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) tree that is estimated to be 900 years old and is nicknamed “Morinokamisama (Forest Spirit)”, and walk around the Kurumi-no-sawa Stream located nearby. Over a long period of time, the snow that falls on the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range, including Tenninkyo, becomes spring water known as “Daisetsu Asahidake Source Water”. At the Daisetsu Asahidake Source Water Park, abundant water gushes out, even during the winter, and many people visit the park to collect it.
