The Rooftop of Hokkaido: the Daisetsuzan National Park

The largest of the mountain parks in Japan, Daisetsuzan National Park stretches approximately 60 km to the north and south, 50 km to the east and west, and is approximately 226,000 ha in area. It is located in the headwater area of the Ishikari and Tokachi rivers, with an expanse of primeval and majestic mountain landscapes throughout the entire region. This is one of Japan's most famous mountain parks and is made up of five active volcanic groups, including the Taisetsu Volcanic Group, the main peak of which is Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido. Since there is a wide range of natural environments, there are habitats for a variety of flora and fauna, including those that can only be found here.
